International Trade Promotion

International trade is one of the keys to the economic vitality of Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin.  Few can argue that global demands for natural resources underpin our economy.  Fewer still can argue that the success of our premiere industries is due to both importations of supplies and exports of finished goods.  Clearly, success is in the air – if we seize the opportunities.

Because the success and overall health of our economy relies on trade, we firmly believe in the promoting trade.  Our efforts include a concentration on educating, researching potential partners, and connecting our members with potential trading partners.  Below are our key components:

Duluth MinnesotaSpecific Components of the Program Include:

  1. Emerging Markets Trade Missions: The United States has five percent of the world’s population.  As a result, the largest business opportunities lie beyond our borders.  Participation in an Emerging Market Trade Mission will help you (and your company) capitalize on potential markets in the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and Poland (BRICP).   This year, Northland businesses are encouraged to apply and participate in Governor Pawlenty’s Trade Mission to India.  Northland businesses will explore opportunities in New Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai.

  2. Yearly NAFTA/DR CAFTA Trade Mission: Participation in this mission will lead you to one of the markets wherein the US has entered into Free Trade Agreements (FTA).  You will meet eager customers who know the value of American FTAs.   This market opportunity will be held in collaboration with one of the US Chamber of Commerce’s American Chambers abroad, the US Commercial Service and/or the Canadian/Mexican Consulates.

  3. Meet and Greet Foreign Trade Delegations:  Foreign officials are tasked with the responsibility of making connections for their businesses.  As a result, they often seek out opportunities to meet our local businesses.  Sign up to be notified when this delegation is in town and we’ll be sure to connect you at the appropriate times.

  4. Quarterly Trade Roundtables: These roundtables are informal in nature, but effectively allow the exchange of ideas, tips and information.

  5. Quarterly Trade Meetings: These meetings are similar to the public policy member meetings.  Relevant speakers will advise and impart information about issues relating to international trade.

  6. Northern Networks Conference: This event is designed to bring awareness to local, regional, national, and international trade.  To form a basis of participation, delegations from Northeastern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Canada will participate in business exchanges throughout the year to explore specific trade opportunities. These visits will be facilitated by area Chambers of Commerce and trade partners.  In addition to gaining tools to broaden their trade markets, participants will benefit
